63rd Anniversary

On July 2nd, my grandparents celebrated their 63rd Anniversary.
Think about that, 63 years!
Their marriage has been one of the most positive examples I've had in my life and I'm so grateful for that. I remember as a little girl viewing their relationship as respectful, loving, playful, and solid.

On a Sunday morning in 1947, Grandma first saw Grandpa riding his red, Indian Chief motorcycle on his way to visit my Grandma's brother. They were introduced, soon began a 2-year courtship, and were married on July 2, 1949. Their first home was a small, 2-room cabin. The roof was made of sod, had railroad ties for siding, a cement floor, and a camp stove on which to cook. Grandma found some apple crates in a junkyard, painted them and made a cupboard for dishes! (now you know where I got my decorating/crafting passion from!)

Here a few questions I recently asked my grandparents on their marriage and some advice for those planning on tying the knot . . .

What are some of your favorite moments throughout your marriage?
Our most favorite moments are simply just being together. When we go out for something to eat we like to say, "Isn't this nice? Just the two of us." We also have great memories from our ministry years in New Zealand and Australia. Vacations to Colorado, Utah, South Dakota, Washington D.C., and Hawaii were also very special. Of course, interacting with our ten grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren is our favorite!

How has your marriage changed over the years?
Grandma: It continues to get better, more devoted, I can't live without him. Having the Lord as a part of our marriage is essential. His protection and being guided by Him.

What advice do you have for young couples planning on getting married?
Learn to forgive. Always be willing to listen, take valuable time out for each other.
Keep God in the center.

Happy 63 years Grandma and Grandpa! You are very special to so many!

O LORD my God, I take refuge in you; save and deliver me from all who pursue me...
—Psalm 7:1 (NIV)
